The University of New Mexico men's golf team claimed its first tournament of the year Monday afternoon. The Lobos posted a 2-over par 290 in the final round to coast to a 14-under 850 at the National Invitational Tournament at the OMNI Tucson National Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz. The Lobos' Nick Geyer also claimed the individual title. Geyer posted a 2-under 70 in his final round to finish with a three-round total of 9-under 207.

The 46th-ranked Lobos dominated a field that included eight teams ranked higher than them - No. 11 UNLV, No. 13 Texas, No. 17 TCU, No. 32 Colorado State, No. 34 Baylor, No. 36 Cal and No. 38 Arizona. The Lobos finished seven strokes better than their closest competitor, the host Wildcats. The team title is the first for the Lobos since the 2006 William H. Tucker Invitational and 14th under head coach Glen Millican.

Geyer posted a tournament-low 6-under 66 in the first round and finished the first day's 36 holes tied with Arizona's Philip Bagdade at 7-under 137. Geyer polished off the field with a 2-under 70 in the final round to finish at 9-under, besting second-place finisher James Sacheck from TCU by two strokes. It's the junior's first tournament win as a Lobo and his best finish since taking third at the 2006 Pioneer Classic his freshman year.

Geyer was one of four Lobos to finish in the top 11, with all five Lobos finishing in the top-20. Steve Saunders shot a 1-under 71-71-73=215 to finish 10th. It's Saunders second straight top 10 finish, having taken second place at the Barona Collegiate Cup, the Lobos' last tournament. Tom Carlson and James Erkenbeck finished one stroke behind Saunders to tie for 11th. Erkenbeck shot an even-par 73-68-75=216, while Carlson posted a 70-73-73=216. Erkenbeck now has six top-25 finishes in his eight varsity tournaments this season. Carlson posted his fourth top 25 finish in five events. The duo also tied for 25th-place at the Barona Cup.

Jon Sauer posted a 2-over 74-70-74=218 to tie for 18th place, marking his sixth top-20 finish. Lobo Jacob Lestishen shot an 18-over 77-75-82=234 playing as an individual.

"The entire team did a great job this week," said Millican. "Everybody played really solid. It's good to see it all come together. Everyone's really excited."

"It feels just incredible," said Geyer of his first collegiate tournament win. "I've been playing well and hitting the ball really well before coming down here. So I made a real effort to stay patient and really concentrate on my putting. I've been hitting it real close, so it was just a matter of time before I started to score the way I'm capable of. It's great to see all the hard work pay off."

The Lobos have a first, second and third-place finish in their last three tournaments. Up next for UNM is a trip to the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at the University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas March 30-31.
