OPENING DRIVE: The 16th-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team continues its 2003 spring campaign at the 2003 John Burns Invitational in Honolulu, Hawaii. The 54-hole tournament begins Wednesday, February 19 and concludes Friday, February 21 with 18 holes played each day. Golfers will tee off at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.

THE FIELD: The full field of the John Burns Invitational includes No. 8 University of Arizona, Auburn University, No. 47 Brigham Young University, No 36 University of California, UC-Santa Barbara, No. 43 Denver University, the University of Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, No. 2 University of Nevada at Las Vegas, Pacific University, No. 42 San Diego State University, the University of San Francisco, San Jose State University, Southern Methodist University, No. 41 University of Texas at El Paso and the University of Utah. UNM head coach Glen Millican will take Michael Letzig, David Schultz, Jay Choi, Madalitso Muthiya and Ian Medlock for competition, while Derek Abel will play as an individual.

THE COURSE: The John Burns Invitational will be played at the 6,916-yard, par-72 Leleihua Golf Club in Honolulu.

RESULTS: Results from the John Burns Invitational can be found on the UNM website at www.GoLobos.com as soon as is possible following play both Monday and Tuesday.

LAST TIME ON THE COURSE: At the PING Arizona Intercollegiate, the Lobos finished tied for 6th place with Arizona State University in the 18-team tournament. New Mexico had two top-20 finishers in Michael Letzig (tied for 6th) and Ian Medlock (tied for 19th). It was Letzig’s third top-ten finish this season and Medlock’s third top-20 finish. As a team, it was the Lobos’ lowest finish of the year. New Mexico’s previous low was a 5th place finish at the Barona Collegiate Cup in October. Both the varsity and junior varsity squads have won tournaments this year.

LOBOS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: The Lobos are ranked No. 16 in the most recent GolfWeek poll, dated February 16, 2003. GolfWeek had the Lobos ranked 3rd in the October 5 poll, the highest ranking ever attained by a UNM men’s golf team. Senior Michael Letzig, the Mountain West Conference Golfer of the Month for September, is rankeda stellar 27th in the GolfWeek rankings with a rating of 70.22 while freshman Jay Choi is at No. 112 after peaking at No. 53 following his win at the Club Glove Intercollegiate at Pepperdine. Jay Reynolds checks in at No. 136 in the Feb. 16 GolfWeek poll. Choi’s win at the Club Glove made him the first true UNM freshman to ever win a tournament. The Precept Coaches Poll of February 12, 2003 has the Lobos ranked 16th and receiving one first-place vote.)
