Men's Golf: Lobos Take 2nd Place At John Burns Invitational
Wahiawa, Hawaii -- The UNM men's golf team, behind par or better scores from 4 of 5 individual players, finished in a tie 2nd place with San Diego State University at the talent-laden John Burns Invitational in Hawaii.
Freshman phenom Jay Choi fired a 3rd-round 69 (-3) and senior Michael Letzig came in at 70 (-2) in the final round to lead the way for the 16th ranked Lobos, who beat out five top-50 collegiate golf teams, including No. 2 University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
Choi was the Lobos' highest finisher. He ended the John Burns tied for 9th place (71-72-69212, -4) while Letzig followed, finishing tied for 12th place (70-73-70213, -3). Madalitso Muthiya hit an even 72 Friday to finish tied for 26th (76-68-72216, E), as did Ian Medlock, who finished tied for 34th place (72-73-72217, +1). David Schultz shot an unlikely 78 on Friday to finish tied for 40th place (68-73-78219, +3) while Derek Abel, playing as an individual, had his best round of the tournament, a 3-under par 70, to finish tied for 64th place.
The Lobos (281-286-283850, -14) were 7 strokes behind tournament winner University of Arizona (280-283-280+843, -21), which led throughout the three-day tourney.
The second place finish was the Lobos' 4th top-5 varsity finish out of the five varsity tournaments they've competed in. New Mexico hits the links again March 9-11 at the Las Vegas Intercollegiate at the Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas, Nevada.
