Lobos Tied For 17th At NCAA Championships
Stillwater, Oklahoma -- The UNM men's golf team, looking to improve upon its 26th place finish at the NCAA Championships a year ago, is already on pace to do just that, as after one day of play, the Lobos are tied for 17th place overall with the University of Kentucky with a team score of 309 (+21).
The Lobos finished at around the middle of the pack Tuesday, despite no par-or-better scores from any of their individual players. Freshman Jay Choi came the closest with a 1-over par score of 73. He is tied for 13th place individually. The biggest surprise for New Mexico, was the play of team leader Michael Letzig, who shot an uncharacteristic 5-over par 77 to finish the first day of play tied for 59th. After that, the scores don't get much better. Ian Medlock is tied for 72nd overall (78, +6), Madalitso Muthiya is tied for 106th place (81, +9) and Jay Reynolds is locked in a tie for 142nd place (86, +14). But with three days of play remaining, there's plenty of time for redemption. The Lobos tee off between 6:00 and 6:36 a.m. Wednesday morning in day two of competition.
