Lobo Men's Golf Team Opens Season in Minnesota
It's time to get back to work.
The University of New Mexico men's golf team will begin the 2012-13 Sunday when it travels to Wayzata, Minn., to compete in The Golfer Invitational.
The University of Minnesota is host to the 15-team event that includes No. 2 California (according to Golfweek.com's preseason rankings), No. 7 Arkansas, No. 13, Kent State, No. 22 Oklahoma and No. 28 SMU - in addition to the 18th-ranked Lobos.
UNM returns its top six players from the 2011-12 squad that finished one stroke away from qualifying for the NCAA Championships last summer. Iowa edged the Lobos at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Athens, Ga., for the fifth and final qualifying spot in the NCAA Championships.
"Obviously, with six guys returning who competed for us all last season, it gives us a lot more experience than we had last year when we had three new players on the team rosters we sent out to our tournaments," 12th-year coach Glen Millican says. "The expectations are probably a little higher because of our experience compared to last year."
Senior John Catlin has been included among Golf Digest's (or GolfWorld's) top 50 collegiate players in 2012-13. Catlin, fellow senior James Erkenbeck and sophomore Victor Perez are coming off All-Mountain West performances last season.
The trip north is the first of 12 tournaments for UNM that culminate with the Mountain West Championships in May in Tucson, Ariz.
