Lobo Men's Golf Team in Golfweek Preview Logjam
Sept. 23, 2012
In Alpharetta, Ga., behind sophomore Sean Romero's even-par 70, the 18th-ranked University of New Mexico men's golf team sits in a three-way for third place after Sunday's first round of the PING Golfweek Preview.
The Lobos' 7-over 287 leaves them six strokes behind leader and 15th-ranked UNLV. The Rebels' 281 is one stroke better than No. 5 UCLA in the 15-team event. Fourteen of the 15 team in the field are ranked, including the top seven teams by the Golfweek.com preseason poll.
"I'm very happy with the way we started," UNM coach Glen Millican said. "This is as good a course as we'll ever see, and if we can play well here, we can play well anywhere.
"But we've got to come back out and play well again tomorrow because every team in this field is capable of shooting a really low round."
The Lobos are tied with fourth-ranked and tournament host Georgia Tech and San Diego State, the only unranked team in the field. Three strokes separate 10 teams from third place to 10th. No. 1-ranked Arkansas currently is tied with No. 9 Texas A&M for 13th place at 14-over 294.
"Today's round definitely shows we're as capable of doing some of the things that the really great teams can do," Millican said. "But in a tournament like this, you can't have a bad round. We have to stay in the present and keep our focus."
Romero's 70 leaves in a tie for seventh place in the 75-player field, three strokes behind leader Tom Berry of San Diego State. Berry shot a 3-under 67.
"Sean's hitting the ball a little farther this year," Millican said, "and he's striking the ball well. He played a smart round of golf today."
New Mexico will tee off with UNLV and UCLA today at 8:40 a.m. Mountain Time.
