Men's Golf: Lobos Take Fifth At Barona Cup

LAKESIDE, Calif -- The 6th-ranked UNM men's golf team finished in fifth place at the 18-team Barona Collegiate Cup, with a three-day score of 857.

The Lobos finished 11 strokes behind host San Diego State, which fired a team total 281 Tuesday (846 overall) to surpass the University of Denver, which held the lead after 36 holes.

The highest individual finisher for UNM was Madalitso Muthiya. He finished in a tie for 9th place with four other competitors after he shot a third-round score of 71 (-1) to finish with a three-day total of 212 (-4). Michael Letzig finished in a tie for 17th place (214), David Schultz was one stroke behind (215) to finish tied at 21st and Ian Medlock finished at 39th place (219).

Jim Anderson, playing as an individual, carded a three-day total of 222 (+6) to finish tied for 55th place, while Jay Choi ended up at number 61.

The Barona Collegiate Cup was the last fall action for the UNM men's team. The Lobos begin spring play in February 2003.
