Lobo Erkenbeck Earns MW Men's Golfer of the Month Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - University of New Mexico senior James Erkenbeck earned Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month honors for October, the conference announced Friday.
Erkenbeck posted five of his six rounds under par during tournament play in October and collected a scoring average of 70.83 in leading the Lobos to a No. 4 national ranking in both the Golfweek.com/Sagarin and Golfstat.com polls.
"It's a nice award to cap off the fall semester," Erkenbeck said. "I probably have my teammates to thank for that award, considering how well we played all semester."
Erkenbeck, a San Diego native, finished tied for second at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla., from Oct. 21-13, leading the Lobos to a second-place finish behind winner and top-ranked California.
Erkenbeck's 3-under 213 (72-70-71) featured 10 birdies and an eagle. His second-round 70 was the second-lowest score of the round, and his final-round 71 was the third-lowest score of the day. The Isleworth included five of the top 10 teams in the nation, and nine of the top 20.
The Lobos then tied for second at the54-hole Royal Oaks Invitational in Dallas, on Oct. 29-30 as Erkenbeck was one of three UNM golfers to score a 3-under 68 in the final round to help the team zoom up from a seventh-place standing after the second round. The Lobos posted the low team score of 9-under 275 during the final round.
Erkenbeck tied for 16th with a 1-under 212 (73-71-68) band helped UNM make up 14 strokes on Texas Tech to tie the Red Raiders for second, four strokes behind champion and 16th-ranked Oklahoma State. Royal Oaks featured four top-20 and nine top-50 programs.
The award is the second for Erkenbeck, and the first since his freshman season.
