Lobo Men's Golf Signs Quartet
Nov. 20, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The fourth-ranked University of New Mexico men’s golf team has taken measures to ensure success beyond the 2012-13 season.
The Lobos have signed four student-athletes – three nationally ranked players and one former state champion – for the 2013-14 season, coach Glen Millican has announced.
Andrej Bevins, a senior from Elk Grove, Calif., Julien de Poyen, a native of Guadeloupe, France and member of the French Federation national team, Andre Garcia, a senior from Mansfield, Texas and Ryan Medhaug, a senior from Veblen, S.D., all have signed national letters of intent to play for New Mexico, beginning next fall.
“We’re very excited about or 2013 class,” Millican said. “This class brings in four guys from very different backgrounds, all coming with great experience. Each of them has shown on many occasions that they’re able to compete with and beat the best players in their age groups.”
Bevins advanced to the round of 16 at the 2012 USGA Junior Amateur 2012 Championships in July, finished third at both the 2012 AJGA Under Armour/Gary Woodland Championship in April and AJGA Heather Farr Classic in April and was runner-up to current Lobo senior John Catlin at the Memorial Amateur Championship in May.
Bevins qualified for three USGA events in 2012, including the 2012 USGA Amateur and USGA Publinks Championships.
De Poyen qualified for the British Amateur Championship and finished 41st at the Irish Amateur Championship in May.
He is the 2009 Texas Junior Golf Tour champion and the 2010 Texas Junior Golf Tour Traditions medalist champion.
Garcia is a two-time Texas All-State player and a three-time state qualifier. He was a member of the Mansfield team that won the Texas 5A state championship in 2011, finishing eighth, individually.
He won the Bart Granger High School Invitational, the largest high school tournament in the nation) in Fort Worth, Texas in September. He tied for the lowest-ever score with a 10-under 206 (66-67-69) in the event, which features past champions Charlie Beljan (a former Lobo now who recently won his first PGA event), John Peterson (a PGA Tour member out of LSU), Martin Flores (a tour member who attended Oklahoma) and Jordan Spieth (a two-time Junior Amateur champion who is the No. 5 collegiate player at Texas).
Garcia tied for third at the Byron Nelson Junior in Fort Worth, Texas in June and carries a 3.81 grade-point average.
He has three top-five finishes in AJGA events this year, including third-place performances at the McArthur Towel & Sports Future Legends in Hartland, Wis., in July and the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities in East Moline, Ill., in June.
Medhaug also finished third at the Future Collegians World Tour Classic Club Junior Golf Tournament in February in Palm Desert, Calif.
“Four freshmen with these resumes will add depth to the talented group that will return next season, helping replace a strong 2013 senior Lobo class,” Millican said. “In addition to playing great golf, each of these four will come to UNM after graduating with high GPAs. Being great students will allow them to have a smooth transition to college golf and let them hit the ground running.”
