Lobos Top Lions, 2-0 in Front of 2,696 Fans
Sept. 23, 2011
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The No. 11 University of New Mexico men's soccer team improved to 6-0-2 Friday night with a 2-0 victory over Loyola Marymount at the UNM Soccer Complex in front of 2,696 fans on "Stuff the Stadium" night.
Game two of the Lobos' double-header event with the women's team showcased a fairly composed, and steady-paced game. New Mexico possessed the ball patiently and tested LMU's defense consistently over the course of the game, earning the edge in shots taken, 19-13.
The Lobos' attack was well dispersed, with eight different players firing off at least one shot. The team took nine first-half shots but, in what has become a trend over their past four games, didn't convert until the second half.
Giovanni Rollie struck first for New Mexico, netting his third goal of the season in the 62nd minute. It worked as the eventual game winner, the second of the season for Rollie. The redshirt freshman received a cross left from Devon Sandoval and put the ball past LMU keeper Jack McCormack.
In the 75th minute it was Sandoval's turn to hit. The junior struck unassisted from the top of the penalty box to notch his fifth goal of the season. With the assist and goal Sandoval leads the Lobos with a total of 13 points on the season. Last week's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Player of the Week, Sandoval has now scored in back-to-back games.
Lobo keeper Victor Rodriguez picked up his sixth win of the season, fending off six shots-on-goal. McCormack took the loss for the Lions.
MPSF Conference play begins next week at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 for New Mexico as the Lobos travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to face UNLV. The Rebels are 1-6-0 on the season and are coming off a 4-0 loss to No. 8 UC Irvine.
