Aug. 27, 2012
LONG BEACH, Calif. - New Mexico men's soccer senior forward Devon Sandoval had quite the night in UNM's 3-2 win at #2 UCLA Friday evening. His two goals and assist have earned him mutiple national honors. He is both College Soccer News' National Player of the Week and a member of Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week for week one of the 2012 college soccer season.
College Soccer News wrote of their national Player of the Week, "Sandoval and his New Mexico teammates traveled to Los Angeles expecting to get a result and they did with an impressive season opening win over always talented and highly regarded UCLA. Sandoval contributed two goals and an assist to help propel the Lobos to a 3-2 win."
The senior forward becomes the first Lobo to win CSN's National Player of the Week award since Jeff Rowland during the 2005 season.
Sandoval was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's National Team of the Week Monday morning. UNM's 3-2 win over the Bruins was broadcast on the PAC-12 Network to millions of homes across the country.
His five points earned at UCLA was a new career high. It marks the second time Sandoval has scored twice in a match, which the hometown native did against Syracuse in week three of last season. He is the first player to score a pair of goals against the Bruins since December 4, 2010 when Louisville's Colin Rolfe did so in the 2010 College Cup.
The senior from Albuquerque is no stranger to weekly honors. He was named MPSF Player of the Week as well as a member of College Soccer News' National Team of the Week following the third week of the 2011 season. He is the first Lobo to make TopDrawer's National Team of the Week since Kyle Venter in mid-November last season.
