"Somos Nuevo Mexico" - Men's Soccer To Don Special Jerseys
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - As the new uniform craze sweeps through college athletics, the University of New Mexico men's soccer team is the latest program to introduce alternate uniforms. The eighth-ranked Lobos will don special uniforms in honor of their Spanish-themed night promotion for their home opener Friday night against No. 25 UAB.
The front of the uniforms says "Nuevo Mexico" along with uniform numbers and the years of the program's NCAA Tournament appearances and conference championships. The back of the uniform includes, "Somos Nuevo Mexico" underneath the jersey number, which is the Spanish translation of "We Are New Mexico". The color scheme strays a little bit from UNM's regular cherry and silver, as it incorporates turquoise which was used by the university in the past.
"We wanted to do something special to highlight the fact that our program proudly represents the state of New Mexico. New Mexico is a melting pot of cultures, and we embrace that diversity," said Head Coach Jeremy Fishbein
The men's basketball program used the same color scheme for their throwback uniforms donned in February of this year.
There will be a limited number of replica t-shirts on sale for $18.95 in the merchandise location in the northwest of the UNM Soccer Complex. Get there early to get your t-shirt. The promotion is in support of the No. 8 Lobos' home opener of the 2012 season. The match is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. (MT) versus No. 25 UAB at the UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque.
Friday night's game is just part of a weekend of soccer in Albuquerque. The team will run its Lobo Soccer and El Mezquite Youth Clinic from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012. The clinic is ran by members of the Lobo Soccer program and former professional soccer players from Mexico. The staff is highlighted by former Mexica international star Luis "El Matador" Hernandez. It will be held at New Mexico's practice facility, Robertson Field.
