Men's Soccer: Lobos Stay Perfect; Defeat Illinois-Chicago 4-1
Denver, Colo. - The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team defeated Illinois-Chicago, 4-1, this afternoon in Denver, Colo. For the third game in a row, the Lobos’ goal-scoring came from their talented group of freshmen. Brandon Moss and Lance Watson scored the first two goals for UNM, and Ben Aswill connected on the last two Lobo scores. The win moves the Lobos’ record to 4-0-0, their best start since the 1987 season.
UNM got off to an uncharacteristically slow start this afternoon, failing to score in the first-half for the first time this season. Also unusual for New Mexico was the first-half goal they gave up to the Flames’ (2-2-0) Micah Howser in the 16th minute. It was just the third goal sophomore Andrew Weber has allowed in four games this season and the only time UNM has trailed at halftime.
Despite the sluggish start, UNM came out of the locker room firing at UIC goalie Ross Cain. The Lobos evened the score when Moss took a pass from junior Stian Eriksen and put it in the back of the net in the 52nd minute. It was Moss’s second goal of the season and the first assist for Eriksen. New Mexico took aim with 18 shots in the second-half, including nine shots-on-goal and four scores.
The Lobo’s second score came in the 69th minute when Watson connected unassisted for his third goal of the season. Watson has at least one point in all four of UNM’s games this season. He is tied with Ashwill for team-high in points with eight.
Ashwill finished off UNM’s scoring with the first multi-goal game by a Lobo since Ty Hibbert scored two goals against Sacramento State in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament on November 8, 2001. Ashwill’s first goal was unassisted in the 83rd minute. His second score came in the 89th minute with sophomore Eric Carlson dishing out his second assist of the year on the play. Ashwill leads the team with four goals and eight points on the season.
New Mexico (4-0-0) will have its home opener at the UNM Soccer Complex next Friday, September 13 at 7:30 p.m. (M.D.T.) against Cal Poly. This will be the second contest of the TLC Plumbing and Utilities Invitational, which begins with a neutral game on Friday at 5:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) between UNLV and Evansville. Friday night is also “Stuff the Stadium” at UNM. Tickets will be available for $1.00 in advance by calling 925-LOBO or stopping by the UNM ticket office at The Pit.
