Men’s Soccer: Lobos Down Cal Poly, 3-0, For Best Start in School History
Albuquerque, N.M. - The University of New Mexico men’s soccer team defeated Cal Poly, 3-0, in their home opener tonight at the UNM Soccer Complex. Over 2,500 Lobo fans came out for the first night of the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational to see freshman Ben Ashwill, sophomore Eric Carlson, and senior Javier Carrasco all score for the Lobos (5-0-0).
The Lobos came into tonight’s game with the No. 13 ranked offense in the country and were looking to put on a strong showing for the home crowd. Carlson got things going early for UNM when he headed in a corner kick from junior Micah Newman in the 8th minute of play. It was the first time in 11-straight scores for UNM that the goal was not made by a Lobo freshman.
Just minutes later, sophomore goalie Andrew Weber showed that he can be an offensive weapon, as well as the anchor of the 28th ranked defense in the country. Weber booted a 95 yard goal-kick to Carlson who headed it forward to Ashwill for the second score in less than seven minutes. Ashwill now has five goals on the season. It was Weber’s first career assist and the team-leading third assist on the year for Carlson.
The Lobos juggled their lineup for the rest of the first half, with 19 players seeing action. It wasn’t until the 62nd minute that Carrasco found the back of the net on a cross from Ashwill for his first score of the season.
Weber showed his defensive ability with ten minutes left to play when the Mustangs (1-3-0) were fighting hard to keep from being shut out. They fired three consecutive, point-blank shots at Weber that were all turned away, giving the Lobo goalie his second shutout of the season. Weber now has seven career shutouts, putting him in a tie for fifth on UNM’s all-time list.
With the win, Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein earned his 100th collegiate career victory. His record stands at 100-60-10 (.645) that includes nine years of coaching at the Division II level and his fast start at UNM.
Earlier in the evening, Evansville (4-0-1) defeated UNLV (2-3-0) in overtime, 2-1. The Lobos will face Evansville on Sunday, September 15 at 1:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) at the UNM Soccer Complex in the final game of the TLC Plumbing and Utility Invitational. Actions begins on Sunday with UNLV taking on Cal Poly in the neutral match, starting at 11:00 a.m.
