No. 7 Men's Soccer To Host Tournament Field - First Up Dartmouth
Sept. 13, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The seventh-ranked University of New Mexico will host the TLC Plumbing, Heating and Cooling Lobo Invitational with a field that also includes Missouri State, Dartmouth, and UC Irvine. #7 NEW MEXICO AT A GLANCE: The Lobos defeated No. 25 UAB 2-0 in its home opener last Friday. The monsoon-like conditions were memorable as was the victory itself. However, the victory saw several Lobo firsts. Senior Nik Robson scored the first goal of his UNM career while James Rogers scored his first goal of the season. Goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez also recorded his first shutout of the season. DARTMOUTH AT A GLANCE: The Big Green are the defending Ivy League champions. The program, which began play in 1915, returns 23 members from its NCAA Tournament team a year ago. Dartmouth and New Mexico have one common opponent, SMU. The Lobos defeated the Mustangs 3-1 while Dartmouth dropped a 2-1 decision to them last Friday. COACH FISHBEIN: Jeremy Fishbein enters his eleventh season as head coach at New Mexico. The program is 140-45-25 on his watch and has qualified for the NCAA Tournament eight out of his ten seasons in Albuquerque. Under Fishbein, the Lobos have a record of 72-31-16 (.672) against non-conference opponents in the regular season and the NCAA Tournament. LOBOS TO WATCH: After winning back-to-back MPSF Player of the Week awards, Devon Sandoval was relatively quiet in UNM's 2-0 victory over No. 25 UAB. He and fellow senior, Blake Smith, have scored in 27 different matches since 2010. The "Big Guns" figure to be the odds-on favorites to find the back of the net for the Lobos. ALL-TIME VS. DARTMOUTH: The two programs have only one previous meeting. The Big Green downed the Lobos 1-0 during the 2010 season in Hanover, New Hampshire. Ten current Lobos are on the current roster from that 2010 team. DOWN THE ROAD: It will be a full weekend of matches for Coach Fishbein and company. UNM will play UC Irvine from the Big West Conference in the second game of tournament play. The Lobos will face the Anteaters at 1 p.m. (MT) on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex. 2012 Highlights: Enjoy this highlight reel from the first portion of this season.
