Men's Soccer: Lobos Tie All-Time Win Mark
Sacramento, Calif. - The University of New Mexico mens soccer team tied its single season win mark with a, 2-1, victory over Sacramento State this afternoon. The Lobos are now 14-2-0 on the season, including 4-0-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Lobos got second half goals from sophomore Danny Bills and junior Stian Eriksen to erase a 1-0 deficit and extend their current winning streak to six games. New Mexico has won 14 games on two previous occasions, 1994 (14-6-0) and 1992 (14-4-1).
Todays match-up featured the two best defenses in the MPSF. Lobo goalie Andrew Weber is second in the conference with a 0.80 goals-against-average, while Hornet keeper Matt McDougal leads the MPSF with a 0.73 G.A.A. Both defenses were tough this afternoon with only three shots-on-goal taken by each team.
The first score came in the 54th minute when Hornet junior Sam Sneed sent a cross to fellow junior Eric Rabbon in front of the Lobo goal. Weber wasnt able to get a hand on it and the Hornets took a 1-0 lead. This was the first time the Lobos trailed since Drury took a 2-1 lead in the 70th minute on October 13, a span of more than three games and 344 minutes.
UNM wasnt down for long as freshman Lance Watson was taken down in the box in the 69th minute. Bills stepped up and fired in his third goal of the season off a penalty kick, tying the game at 1-1. Bills is now three of four on penalty kicks for the season.
The Lobos game-winning goal came just 22 seconds later when freshman Ben Ashwill fed Watson who one touched the ball to Eriksen for the score. Eriksens shot from 15 yards out on the right side resulted in his second goal of the season and gave UNM the 2-1 win.
The Lobos next travel to San Jose State (9-7-0, 3-0-0 MPSF) for a 1:00 p.m. (M.S.T.) match on Sunday, November 3. UNM was tied with the Spartans and UNLV (10-5-0, 3-0-0 MPSF) for the conference lead coming into this weekends action, but UNLV and San Jose State faced each other in San Jose, Calif. on Friday night. Sacramento State falls to 4-7-4 and 1-2-1 in MPSF play with a game against UNLV in Sacramento, Calif. on Sunday.
The Lobos are fighting for one of the top two spots in the MPSF Mens Soccer Championships which will be held at the UNM Soccer Complex on November 14-17, 2002. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds receive a first-round bye and will only need two wins to earn the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Tickets are one sale now for the championships.
