Men's Soccer: Lobos Drop Regular Season Finale, 2-0, at UNLV
Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of New Mexico men's soccer team had its seven-game winning streak snapped at UNLV today with a 2-0 loss to the Rebels. The Lobos had six shots-on-goal in the match but couldn't break through a tough Rebel defense. New Mexico (15-3-0, 5-1-0 MPSF) still holds the top spot in the MPSF and has a first-round bye in next week’s championships held at the UNM Soccer Complex. The win clinches the third seed for the Rebels (11-7-0, 4-2-0 MPSF).
The Rebels got on the board in the 26th minute when Kelly Frederick beat Lobo keeper Andrew Weber on a penalty kick. The score remained 1-0 for the rest of the first half. In the second frame, UNLV got an insurance goal when Alex Hernandez sent a cross into the box that Rod Dyachenko was able to put past Weber for a 2-0 lead.
The Lobos could not get an offense going as they were held to under ten shots (8) for just the fourth time this season. New Mexico tested Rebel keeper Justin Dennis on six occasions, but the UNLV keeper made saves on each try and became just the second goalie to shutout the Lobos this season.
UNM will return home to prepare for the 2002 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer championships next week. The Lobos will play the winner of #5 Denver vs. #4 Sacramento State on Friday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. (M.S.T.).
