2012 Fall: Junior Season

Mads Hegelund made it to the quarterfinals in the Midland Collegiate Invitational. The draw was out of 64 players. He defeated the #5 seed on his way to the quarterfinals.

2011-12: Sophomore Season

He posted an overall singles record of 21-8 and an overall doubles record of 12-7. He received the Mountain West Academic All-Conference Award for spring 2012. He was one of four for UNM men's tennis to receive the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award for 2011-12. Hegelund reached the finals of doubles at the NMSU Invitational with Mitch McDaniels. He went 5-2 in singles at the ITA Regional Tournament.

2010-2011: Freshman Season

In singles, he went 5-5 for the season. He held the number seven spot on the team behind a bunch of upperclassmen and played number six frequently. He was the deciding match in a 4-3 victory against Middle Tennessee at the HEB Corpus Christi Tournament.

Prior to UNM

He is a 2010 graduate of George Washington High School in Denver, Colo. He was the number one singles player for his high school. He placed 3rd at state his senior year. He was coached by Kenneth Mason.

Personal

He is the son of Thomas and Helle Hegelund and has one younger brother, Simon, who is also currently playing tennis at UNM. The family is originally from Denmark. His hobbies include tennis, reading, music, watching and playing sports, and hanging out with friends. His favorite athlete is Roger Federer. He plans to major in psychology.

Head Coach Alan Dils on Hegelund:

"He has improved a lot also. I was excited to see him in the Midland Collegiate Invitational play the best tennis that I have ever seen him play. I think he is gaining confidence in himself and in his abilities. As he gains that confidence, he will certainly be playing in our top six as long as he continues that style of play. It's really a matter of him keeping up that confidence and knowing that he has to do that day in and day out. I'm really excited where he is at. He has improved both mentally and physically."
