2010-2011: Freshman Season

Hegelund ("Fresh Prince") played sparingly during his first year on the team.

Prior to UNM

He is a 2010 graduate of George Washington High School in Denver, Colo and was a straight "A" student. He placed second at the Colorado State Championship his junior year and was named Colorado All-State Tennis Player his senior year. He was coached by Kenneth Mason.

Personal

He is the son of Helle and Thomas Hegelund and has one brother Mads, who is also currently a tennis player for UNM. The family is originally from Denmark. His hobbies are watching movies, and reading. His favorite food is mamma's cooking. He plans to major in communication.

Head Coach Alan Dils on Hegelund:

"It is good to get him off the redshirt. He worked hard last year to improve all aspects of his game. I think the key for Simon is to become a meaner player in terms of going out there and having the bulldog attitude. He needs to make sure his intensity is at a super high level every practice and every match. When he does do that, he is very impressive. I think the challenge for him is to maintain that and keep that intensity level up throughout the entire match, not just at the beginning of it."
