Lobos Chop Down Lumberjacks 4-0 at Home
Feb. 3, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobos are currently undefeated at home after winning their dual match against Northern Arizona, 4-0. The key aspect of the team from the weekend was its depth as the past three matches featured some different players in the lineup and doubles teams that haven't been together before.
The match got started with doubles first. The Lobos took the doubles point in a little under 30 minutes as they stomped out their opponent from start to finish.
"Andrew is a fellow lefty so that was fun," Berg said. "We played really solid and didn't really make any errors at all. I think that helped us out a lot."
Once the Lobos took the doubles point, it was all downhill from there.
At number one singles, Iftikhar dropped only two games to defeat Waters with a score of 6-2, 6-0.
At number three singles, McDaniels led the first set 6-1 against Bermudez. He was up 4-0 looking to finish off the match but his opponent retired putting UNM up 3-0.
"It was good to win," McDaniels said. "When I played juniors, he [Bermudez] always used to beat me. I'm a different player mentally and physically. I've been working really hard so I just got out there and control what I can to the best of my ability and good things will happen."
At number four singles, Phillips came through with the clinch dual match point after defeating Laleli with a score of 6-0, 6-3.
"NAU is a good team," Head Coach Alan Dils said. "We knew we needed to come out with a lot of energy. I even told the guys we got two good matches yesterday and we needed to come out with the best of the entire weekend today, which we did."
The Lobos will travel to Eugene, Ore. to face Arkansas and Oregon on February 9-10, 2013.
