Feb. 4, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The first match of two for the Lobos today finished with a perfect 7-0 win against Western New Mexico. The Lobos record is now 3-2 with 3 wins at home.
The Lobos started singles with a 1-0 lead after taking doubles in all three matches.
In the number one singles, Carl Ho faced Johan Weich defeating him with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Conor Berg played Rodrigo Almeida in the number two position only giving up one game winning the match 6-0, 6-1.
Samir Iftikhar played his first match of the spring season against Juan Pablo Fuentes in the third position. He has not played a match since the UNM Balloon Fiesta on October 7-9, 2011. He won the match 6-3, 6-2 playing at such a high caliber that it was not apparent that he broke a wrist or even missed a match all season.
Mitch McDaniels played Matthieu Covizzi at the number four singles clinching the win for the Lobos at 7-0. He was the last to finish only because him and his opponent were of equal ability winning every other point for UNM and Western New Mexico. McDaniels came out on top in the third set winning 10-8 in the tiebreak. The final match score was UNM 7-5, 6-7, 10-8.
In the number five position, Mads Hegelund faced Jean-Beniot Belin winning the match with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
"It was a good match. It was good to get some of our lower guys a match today. It gave them some experience playing a very good Division II team in Western. It was good to get Guillaume Dupont back here. He was our Lobo Head Pro and he came back as head coach of Western New Mexico so that was fun," Assistant coach Bart Scott said.
"We need to get better at staying and keeping our focus in matches. In doubles particularly, we lost our focus on a couple courts. We started missing simple returns and easy volleys and that gives other teams light. We need to do a little bit better job on keeping our focus throughout the entire match if we want to keep progressing and continue to get better as the year goes on."
The Lobos will be playing tonight at 5 p.m. against Colorado State-Pueblo in the Linda Estes Tennis Complex.
