Head women's basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez has completed her coaching staff for the 2012-13 season, naming former University of Texas star Edwina Brown as an assistant coach on June 12, 2012. She joins Joseph Anders and Anthony Turner as assistants on the staff.

Brown joined the coaching ranks last year with her alma mater the University of Texas after a stellar playing career. She spent one season at Texas as an assistant coach under Gail Goestenkors, where the Longhorns went 18-14, losing in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

"We are very fortunate to have Edwina on our staff, her credentials are tremendous, she will work with the guards and bring a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge," said head coach Yvonne Sanchez. "She is excellent in player development, and a very good floor coach. She will also be responsible with recruiting and scouting reports among other things."

Sanchez added, "I feel very fortunate with the experience I have with the staff that is here. We are excited for the summer recruiting period and upcoming season."

Brown truly could be described as a living legend in the state of Texas, a fact that should bode well for UNM down the line in recruiting wars. Brown was a two-time All-American at Texas and a two-time First Team All-Big XII pick. Playing from 1996-2000, Edwina was the 2000 recipient of the Margaret Wade Award, presented to the nation's top collegiate basketball player. She also was named the 2000 ESPN.com Player of the Year. Brown was the only Big XII Wade Award winner until Brittany Griner of Baylor won the award.

Brown is the only player in UT history to record at least 1,700 points, 500 assists and 250 steals throughout her career, and the only player to lead the Longhorns in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals in the same year, a feat that she accomplished during both her junior and senior seasons.

Brown also brings a bit of international experience, having won a gold medal with the USA Basketball team at the 1998 R. Williams Jones Cup and a bronze medal at the 1999 Pan American Games.

She was drafted by the Detroit Shock with the No. 3 pick in the 2000 WNBA Draft and played five years in the league, including three seasons in Detroit and a year each with the Phoenix Mercury and Houston Comets. In 2000 she finished in a three-way tie for runner-up for WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

She also played professionally overseas. Brown played internationally in Lebanon, Austria, Spain, France and Israel.

Brown does bring other intangibles to the mix. At Texas she was awarded the 2012 Emerging Community Leader Award, given by the AKA Association for Community Development, Inc. Brown was honored for her work with "Map'd" Out (Mentoring Athletes and Providing Dreams), a program she herself developed to lend a helping hand to youth in the community that exemplify sportsmanship, integrity, and desire to "map out" their future goals.

A native of Lockhart, Texas, Brown was inducted into the Texas Women's Hall of Honor in 2009.
