Lobo Women's Basketball Signs Former Highland High Standout Deeva Vaughn

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M - The University of New Mexico's associate women's basketball coach Yvonne Sanchez has announced that Deeva Vaughn has signed a national letter of intent for the 2011-12 season. Vaughn, a 2008 Highland graduate is coming to the Lobos after two successful seasons of junior-college play at Northern Oklahoma College Enid.
"We are very excited to add Deeva to the Lobo family," said Sanchez. "She will add experience to our program and we expect her to come in and play immediately."
The Albuquerque native was recently named to the first-team National Junior College Athletic Association All-American team and was named Region II Player of the Year for the 2010-11 season. Vaughn averaged 19.9 points, 13.6 rebounds and shot 51.5 percent on the floor during her sophomore year.
During the 2010-11 season, Vaughn helped her team to a 30-7 record and a NJCAA Final Four appearance.
During her freshman season at NOC Enid, Vaughn was named to the second-team NJCAA All-American team after averaging 20.0 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.4 steals a game in 2008-09.
Vaughn had missed the 2009-10 season after tearing her ACL in the summer of 2009.
Vaughn played at Highland High School in Albuquerque where she averaged 22.6 points and 12.0 rebounds a game during her four years as a Hornet. During her time at Highland, Vaughan amassed an impressive 2,086 points.
During her senior year of high school, Vaughn led all 5A players in scoring and rebounding with 23.0 points and 14.0 rebounds a game. Vaughn was the Albuquerque Journal Prep Athlete of the Year for the 2007-08 season. She was also named to the 4A/5A New Mexico Girls Coaches Association All-Star team in 2008.
Vaughn has accumulated many other awards during her time at Highland. She was a 5A first-team All-State selection as well as a first-team All-Metro selection.
"It's always great to bring a local kid back home," said Sanchez.
The 6-foot-1 post should be an immediate impact player for the Lobos this season.
