Lobos vs. Weber State Game Notes New Mexico Lobos Women Basketball -- In The Pit

It's possible that the Weber State Wildcats might be running into a Lobos team that has more than a few frustrations to take out on the next enemy. Which happens to be a struggling Weber State team. The Lobos were spanked 72-42 Saturday on their home floor by No. 8 Georgia and you could tell the Lobos didn't like it. They have a bad taste to get out of their mouth. Which is good. This is how you want Lobos to feel after a loss. The Lobos' 5-0 start has raised internal and external expectations and now that their record is blemished these Lobos should be hot to get back on the winning side of the scoreboard. It's looking like Weber State might be a made-to-order rebound. Consider: You have this kind of hoop history and The Pit isn't exactly a place you go to find comfort and healing. Lobo Coach Yvonne Sanchez said her Lobos would accept the lumps dished out by Georgia and try to learn from them. "You learn lessons," said Sanchez. "The biggest thing is you don't put your head down. "We're 5-1. That's a tremendous feat for this program and I'm proud of them for that. There are a lot of things to take from this (loss to Georgia). You can dissect and cut up the film and probably every possession something went wrong, but you can also look for some of the things that went right." The Lobos have had a lot of things go right so far in 2012 and the Wildcats should see a lot of them Tuesday in The Pit. The Lobos have had a number of players step up in a number of key areas. You could say the Lobos' depth is showing. Caroline Durbin tops UNM in scoring at 12.3 followed by Sara Halasz at12.0. Deeva Vaughn has given the Lobos an inside punch and averages 10.3 points. Owens is at 9.5 points per game and her 30 assists double the assists of the next Lobo. Senior Jourdan Erskine showed her board potential pulling down 18 last week in one game and tops that statistical chart with a 6.8 average. Durbin averages 6.0 boards and Halasz is at 5.2. The Wildcats are paced in scoring by two freshmen: 5-7 Desiree Ramos at 9.2 and 5-10 Regina Okoye at 9.2. The team's top two rebounders also are freshmen: 6-foot Kalie Mathews at 8.6 boards a game and 6-1 Jalen Carpenter at 8.6. This is a young team. That freshmen foursome also tops the Weber State scoring column. The Wildcats are on a tough road swing that starts in The Pit on Tuesday and then they head to Utah Valley, Wyoming and Arizona. Maybe Tucson is a reward for having to go to Laramie in December. The Pit might not be a reward. The Lobos are in need of a whipping post and the Wildcats, well, they aren't Georgia.
