LUBBOCK, Texas -- The 14th-ranked New Mexico women's golf team got off to a great start in the NCAA Central Regional Championships by shooting a 3-over 291 as a team in the first round Thursday afternoon at the par 72, 6,328-yard Jerry S. Rawls Course at Texas Tech University. The round of 291, which is the best single round for UNM in a regional championship in school history, puts the Lobos in a tie for second with No. 18 Missouri. No. 21 Texas leads the 21-team field with a 290 (+2).

Junior Christine Fernandez paced the Lobos in the first round by carding a 1-under 71. Fernandez, who is in a tie for fourth, trails leader Diana Ramage of Auburn by just three strokes.

Senior Kailin Downs and sophomore Ashley Rollins each posted scores of even-par 72, which is good for a tie in eighth place.

Senior Christina Spence is tied for 50th with a 4-over 76, and freshman Giselle Claux is tied for 76th with a 6-over 78.

Round two of the NCAA Central Regional Championships is set for Friday. The top eight teams in the regional will advance to the NCAA Championships May 17-20 in Sunriver, Ore.
