Bend, Ore. -- The 12th-ranked University of New Mexico women's golf team, playing under difficult weather conditions, pulled out its A-game and shaved 36 strokes off its first round score of 316 to set a new MWC single-round record of 280 at the 2003 MWC Womens Golf Championships today in Bend, Ore. The Lobos are now tied with UNLV for the lead with a 36-hole total of 596 (+24). Lobo Katrina Leckovic shot a MWC single-round record 67 to take the lead individually with a 141 (-2).

The tournament was delayed for the second day in a row with frost making an appearance. The conditions ranged from rain, sleet and snow throughout the day. Undaunted, Leckovic, a junior from Burnaby, British Columbia, shot her career-low to pace the Lobos.

Sophomore Kailin Downs, one of three Lobos to score sub-par rounds, carded a 70 (-2) to jump nine spots in the standings. Downs is currently tied for third place heading into final round action.

Sophomore Christina Spence also had a career-low round of 69, trimming a hearty 13 strokes off her first-round 82 to tie for eighth at 151 (+8).

Junior Kellyn Newman and sophomore Shannon Johnson are both tied for 17th place at 158 (+15). Newman scored a second round 77 while Johnson finished with a 74.

The final round begins tomorrow morning at 10 a.m (PST) on the Meadows Course at Sunriver Resort which plays to a par-71 over 5,180 yards.
