Mountain West Recognizes UNM Golf Team
July 3, 2012
All six members of the University of New Mexico women's golf team have been named to the Spring 2012 Mountain West Academic all-conference team.
In order to qualify for academic all-conference honors, student-athletes must meet the following criteria: Completed at least one academic semester/quarter at the member institution; have a cumulative grade-point-average, at the member institution, of 3.0 or better; and competed in 50 percent of the team's varsity contests. Sophomore Sofia Hoglund (3.96 GPA in Chemistry) and senior Rebecca Hellbom (3.91 GPA in Music) had the top two grade point averages.
Junior Beth Buchner (3.65 GPA in Management) will receive her bachelor's degree in just over three years after summer classes, then begin an M.B.A. program in the fall. She received 21 credit hours during the 2012 spring semester.
Additionally, five Lobos earned the MW Scholar-Athlete Award. The award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and have participated in varsity competition in an NCAA-sponsored sport.
"We take academics seriously," said head coach Jill Trujillo, whose team combined for a stellar 3.59 GPA during the 2012 spring semester. "All of our ladies would like to play golf at the professional level, however, they realize the importance and value of receiving their degree from UNM."
