Women's Golf: New Mexico Maintains Lead at McGuire

Sophomore Kailin Downs is in Third at McGuire

Albuquerque, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico women’s golf team maintains an eight shot lead over the University of Washington and the University of Oklahoma, who are tied for second at the 24th Annual Comcast Dick McGuire Invitational. The host Lobos shot a second round 292 and are +5 for the tournament at 589. Washington and Oklahoma follow with scores of 597. New Mexico State is fourth with 600 followed by Pepperdine at 601. Final round action begins tomorrow at 8 a.m.at the UNM Championship Golf Course.

Oklahoma’s Lisa Meldrum takes the individual lead with a tournament score of 140 (70-70 • -6) which is a 36-hole individual score record for the McGuire. Pepperdine’s Katherine Hull tied a UNM Championship Course record with her second round 67 which also tied the second round individual score record. Hull is in second place with a 141 (-5). New Mexico’s Kailin Downs is in sole possession of third place with a 143 (-3) heading into the final round.

For the Lobos, sophomore Shannon Johnson is tied for ninth with a 147 followed by sophomore Christina Spence who is tied for 11th with a 148. Junior Katrina Leckovic is next with a tournament score of 151 which places her tied for 10th. Junior Kellyn Newman, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 49th with a 157. Freshman Kelli Van Winkle is tied for 81st with a 165.
