The 18-team field features UNM, host Oklahoma, plus Coastal Carolina, Denver, Kansas, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Kent State, Middle Tennessee State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Redlands Community College, SMU, South Florida, TCU, Texas State, Texas Tech and Tulsa.
UNM LAST YEAR AT THE BERNING CLASSIC - Led by junior Beth Buchner's career-low round of 69, the New Mexico women's golf team finished in fifth place at the 2011 Susie Berning Maxwell Classic.
Playing on a cold and blustery day in the final round at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, UNM tied host and winner Oklahoma for the second-lowest score (300) among the 17 teams to finish at 23-over 887 (289-298-300). The Lobos finished nine shots behind OU (878). The Sooners edged Texas Tech (879) by one shot.
Buchner, who started the day in a tie for 22nd, vaulted into a tie for third (217) after a round that featured four birdies (1, 2, 8 and 13) and just one bogey. She also recorded personal bests for best score in relation to par (+1), low 54-hole total (74-74-69=217) and best finish (tie for 3rd).
Buchner's performance was particularly impressive considering the average score of the 90-player field in the final round was 78.43.
As a team, UNM was 10-over after its first nine holes, but lost just one shot over the final nine. "Beth was tremendous today, especially in some challenging conditions," said head coach Jill Trujillo.
Sophomore Manon De Roey finished in a tie for 36th at 13-over 229 (74-79-76). She navigated the final nine holes in 1-under after playing the first nine in 5-over. Sophomore Sammi Stevens shot 78 to end at 231 (76-77-78) and tie for 45th.
Oklahoma's Anne Tanguay won the individual title by three shots at 6-under 210 (72-67-71).
DE ROEY NAMED MWC GOLFER OF THE MONTH - Lobo Manon De Roey was named Mountain West Golfer of the Month for her stellar performances in September. The junior placed in the top 10 of each of the Lobos' two tournament appearances, including an individual title in UNM's season opener.
De Roey paced the field of 90 golfers at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic Sept. 10-11 in Fort Collins, Colo. The native of Schilde, Belgium, received medalist honors for the first time in her career after carding a school-record 9-under-par 207 (69-68-70) at Ptarmigan Country Club. De Roey's 54-hole total of 207 is the lowest in Lobo history, eclipsing the previous record of 208, which was established by former All-American Jodi Ewart in 2009. De Roey finished at 9-under, which is the third-lowest score by a UNM golfer in program history in relation to par.
De Roey collected her second top 10 finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Sept. 17-18. She posted a 54-hole total of 1-over 220 (75-72-73) to tie for ninth at the UNM Championship Course.
This marks the first career MW Golfer of the Month award for De Roey.
TORRID START FOR DE ROEY - UNM junior Manon De Roey currently ranks tied for fifth nationally with a scoring average of 71.17. To put that number in perspective, the school single-season scoring record is nearly a shot higher - 72.12 - set by three-time All-American Jodi Ewart in 2009-10.
De Roey also ranks high in several other national statistical categories through Oct. 12:
