Booth Named Coach of the Year by LPGA
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., Dec. 9, 2002 The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Teaching and Club Professional (T&CP) Division has announced the 2002 recipients of its prestigious annual national awards, all of which are presented by Steuben: Debbie OConnell, Island Dunes Country Club, Jensen Beach, Fla., Professional of the Year; Krista Dunton, Forsgate Country Club, Monroe Township, N.J., Teacher of the Year; and Jackie Booth, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M., Coach of the Year. The LPGA T&CP Divisions Executive Committee selects the national award winners from the pool of sectional award winners voted on by the members of the LPGA T&CP Divisions five regional sections.
Jackie Booth, who joined the LPGA T&CP Division in 1992 and achieved Class A status in 1995, has been the head womens golf coach at the University of New Mexico (UNM) since 1997. She began her coaching career in 1982 as assistant coach at New Mexico State University and served in that capacity until 1992, when she was promoted to head coach. She served as head coach at New Mexico State University from 1992-96 before being named head coach at the University of New Mexico. In the past year, Booth has led her team to three tournament titles, including a third-straight Mountain West Conference (MWC) championship. She has been named MWC Coach of the Year for two straight years (2001, 2002). Each of her seven-team members were given awards at either conference or national levels, including MWC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year Kailin Downs. Booths emphasis on education is evident, as two of the players from her 2001-02 squad were named National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) Academic All-Americans and five were named to the MWC All-Academic Team. Under Booths direction, the UNM womens golf team has had a 100-percent graduation rate since she became head coach in 1997. Booth serves on the LPGA National Coaches Advisory Committeeand helps organize two LPGA coaches workshops each year. She serves as the NGCA vice president and served on the Golf World College Coaches Poll during the 2001-02 season. "This award is very special to me because it comes from my LPGA peers," said Booth. "I feel very honored to receive this national award. Its not every day that you receive something like this, so its pretty special."
