Women's Soccer: Head Coach Kit Vela Announces Six Signees For 2003





ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - UNM head womens soccer coach Kit Vela has announced the signing of six student-athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003 season. With the addition of these high calibre players, Vela hopes the UNM womens soccer program will continue its success both on the field and in the classroom.

This is a great class thats coming in, said Vela. Each one of them is going to add depth and athleticism to the team and were excited to see what they can do for us in the coming years.

Brittany Emerson, Ashley Lowery, Amy Nelson and Kristine Sweat will all be joining the Lobos from California. Emerson, a midfielder from Capistrano Beach, Calif., currently plays for top southern California club team the Newport Beach Slammers. Lowery and Nelson, both residents of Santa Rosa, Calif., are teammates on the northern California powerhouse Santa Rosa Thunder. Sweat, who hails from the Concord, Calif., is a member of the Bay Oaks Soccer Club.

Katy, Texas native Kellee Hafner will follow in the footsteps of her older sister Laura, who is currently a sophomore on the Lobo womens soccer team, when she becomes a part of the UNM soccer program next fall. The high school senior plays for the Texas Challenge Club team.

Albuquerque resident, Erica Freese, will join seven other New Mexico natives on the roster in 2003. The midfielder is a member of the Albuquerque United Soccer Club.

Vela also plans to bring in at least 2-4 more players for the 2003 squad, which will round out the talented and versatile freshman class.
