ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team finished the Lobo Adidas Classic tournament on a high note Sunday. The Lobos defeated neighboring foe, NAU by a score of 4-2 at the UNM Soccer Complex and improved on the 4-1 loss they suffered last year to the Lumberjacks in Flagstaff, Arizona.

The first goal of the afternoon came from freshman Nicole Pitcock (Stockton, Calif.) The forward was fed a long pass from fellow newcomer Eryn Paetz (San Pedro, Calif.) which she controlled and easily converted for her first goal of the season. Yet again, junior Marte Dolva (Geilo, Norway) made her mark on the score sheet, tallying the second goal of the game for the Lobos and her third of the season. In the 30th minute, Dolva received a punt from goalkeeper Kristen Winters which she headed high into the corner of the Lumberjack goal, out of reach of a leaping Andrea Berra. The goal brings her to a total of seven points on the weekend.

A series of substitutions for the Lobos early in the second half proved to be successful. At the 60:11 mark, Michelle Nowfel, fresh off the bench, got a rebounded shot off in the 18-yard box that stunned NAU’s Berra and found its way into the back of the net. The final Lobo goal was executed in the 70th minute after Laura Hafner (Katy, Texas) got on the end of a Michelle Longmire corner to give the Lobos a 4-0 advantage.

The Lobos’ safe lead was questioned with 11 minutes left in the game. A UNM foul in the box at the 79:33 mark gave the Lumberjacks a chance to answer back on a penalty kick. Sierra Cristiano stepped up to take the kick for NAU and had no problem putting it past Kristen Winters (Lakewood, Colo.) who was unable to reach the high shot. NAU added another goal in the 84th minute when Adria Barchi managed to control a feed from the left wing and put away a shot that finalized the score at 4-2. Carin Larkin was credited with the assist for the Lumberjacks.

The stingy New Mexico defense held NAU to only six shots. On the other end of the field, NAU struggled to keep the bombardment of Lobo shots to a minimum and ended up allowing 17, 10 of which were on goal. Goalkeeper Kristen Winters was required to make two saves, while Andrea Berra earned five, four of which came in the first half alone.

UNM was a perfect 2-0 on the weekend which brings the season record to 2-2. Next up, the Lobos travel to El Paso, Texas where they will face UTEP on Sept. 12 and Texas Tech on Sept. 14 in the Miner Classic tournament.
