Women's Soccer: UNM Tops UNLV, 1-0
Complete Release in PDF Format Las Vegas, Nev. - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team won its second straight conference match today, beating UNLV 1-0. Rachael Addison (Tyler, Texas) also scored her second game winning goal of the weekend against the Rebels to clinch the Lobo win. The victory brings UNM to 9-5, 2-0 in the MWC while UNLV drops to 8-4-1, 0-1 in the MWC. Addison helped the Lobos take the lead in only the seventh minute, firing a shot off a UNLV defensive rebound for the score. The early goal was good enough to secure the Lobo victory at 1-0. Although the shot tally at the end of the game was 17-5 in UNLV favor, New Mexico maintained almost all of the possession in the first half and threatened the Rebels at every chance. In the second half the Lobos were pursued by a hungry Rebel offense, but refused to let UNLV capitalize on any chances. "We absolutely dominated in the first half and played great," said head coach Kit Vela. "The second half was a different story because we had to defend a great deal, but we were successful at it." Goalkeeper Kristen Winters (Lakewood, Colo.) was again unstoppable in net, making eight saves to preserve the shutout (her third in a row).
New Mexico is at home this weekend with conference match-ups against BYU at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17 and Utah at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Cougars and Utes, like the Lobos, are 2-0 in conference play. Both teams beat Air Force and Wyoming on the road this past weekend.i
