Women's Soccer: UNM To Face Air Force In First Round of MWC Championships, Wednesday





Colorado Springs, Colo. - BYU claimed its fourth consecutive regular-season Mountain West Conference women's soccer crown with a 2-1 win over Utah, Saturday. The victory over the Utes earned the Cougars (14-5-0 overall, 6-0-0 MWC) the No. 1 seed in this week's MWC Women's Soccer Championship in Provo, Utah.

Utah earned the second seed with a 4-1-1 record in MWC play and finished the regular-season with an 11-2-3 overall record. New Mexico finished third in league play with a 3-2-1 mark, while San Diego State claimed the fourth seed, posting a 3-3-0 league record. UNLV and Air Force tied for fifth place with 2-4-0 marks, but the Rebels secured the fifth seed since they defeated the Falcons in conference play earlier this season. The seventh seed goes to Wyoming, which finished with an 0-6-0 record.

The conference tournament will take place on Nov. 6-9 at South Field on the campus of BYU in Provo, Utah. The opening match will see fourth-seeded San Diego State taking on No. 5 seed UNLV at 2 p.m. (MST) on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

The Lobos (No.3 seed) will face No. 6 seed Air Force at 4:30 p.m. (MST) on Wednesday as well. Utah will face No.7 Utah in the third match of the day.

BYU will receive a first round bye and play the winner of San Diego State vs. UNLV on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. MST. The other semifinal match is set for 4:30 p.m. MST on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship match is slated for noon on Saturday, Nov. 9, with the winner receiving an automatic bid into the 2002 NCAA Women's College Cup. z
