Lobos defeat four squads at Maverick Meet

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The New Mexico Lobos swimming team traveled to Grand Junction to participate in the Maverick Meet hosted by Colorado Mesa University, and defeated four of the five squads present.
New Mexico notched wins over Adams State College, 216-39, Colorado Mesa University 212-65, Northern Colorado, 175-87, and University of Colorado- Boulder, 209-32.
The Lobos got off to a fast start as they claimed first and second place in the 200-yard medley relay. The team composed of Stelicia Flores, Hayley Martin, Jorgi Hobson and Marissa Campbell touched the wall first and clocked a time of 1:47.38. The team of Amber Amr, Ashley Blanchette, Nicole Peirce and Anna Lillistrom were second with a final of 1:48.94.
UNM also performed well in the 100-yard backstroke and finished first, second and third. Flores was first in 57.68, Campbell was second with a time of 58.64 and Julia Carroll was third clocking a time of 1:00.04.
"We had a solid meet today after a long week and a half of winter training," said head coach Tracy Ljone. "The ladies swam strong today and had good swims while being tired from all the work we've been putting in."
Lindsey Morris took second for UNM in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.05, Nicole Peirce finished behind her for a time of 1:08.08 and Alyssa Keill was fourth in 1:08.70. Keill also took second in the 200-yard breaststroke touching the wall in 2:27.18.
Sophomore Monica Dudley claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a final of 5:13.32. Hobson and Flores also finished first and second in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 57.90 and 58.67, respectively.
Up next for the Lobos is a trip to Fort Collins, Colo., to take on Colorado State on Jan. 21. The UNM diving squad will be joining the swimmers as the teams take on the Rams in the final conference meet before the Mountain West championships.
