Lobos Defeat Air Force 167-143 in Opening Meet of 2012-2013 season

The Kunio Kono era got off to a bang last night as the Lobos defeated the Air Force Falcons 167-143 in the first meet of the season. New Mexico claimed first in nine of the 16 events. The relay team of Stelicia Flores, Ashley Blanchette, Jorgi Hobson and Marissa Campbell set the tone for the night when they won the first event of the meet, the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.05. Amber Amr, Lindsey Morris and Samantha Moss came in second with a time of 1:49.04. Monica Dudley had a good day for UNM racking up two first-place and one second-place finish. The junior from Overland Park, Kan. was first to touch the wall in the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:40.67. She was also a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that came in first with a time of 3:32.28. Her second-place finish came in the 500-yard freestyle. She swam the distance in 5:11.78. Senior Marissa Campbell also had a solid night for the Lobos. The Albuquerque native was a part of the 200-yard medley relay team that was first. She also claimed first in her signature event: the 50-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 24.48. She fell short in the 100-yard freestyle and finished second in 52.85. The 100-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke and 100-yard backstroke were all swept by New Mexico as well. Jorgi Hobson clocked a time of 58.07 in the 100-yard fly while Stelicia Flores and Lindsey Morris were first in the 100-yard back and breaststroke with times of 58.11 and 1:06.69, respectively. Up next for the Lobos is the first home meet of the season against Northern Arizona. That contest is Oct. 20 at noon in Seidler Natatorium on the UNM campus.
