Swimming and Diving: UNM Swims A Close Second To UNLV At Home-Opener

Albuquerque, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's swimming and diving team came close to beating last year's MWC second place-finishers, UNLV on Saturday, Oct. 26. The Lobos finished the meet with 140 points to the Rebels' 159. Several New Mexico swimmers grabbed first-place honors, including sophomore Becca Barras who came away with the top spot in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.

Seven of the 16 events at the meet were won by Lobos. Freshmen Robyn Miller (Napa, Calif.) and Whitney Thomson both claimed firsts on Saturday. Miller swam the 200-yard free in a time of 1:53.12, beating UNLV's Raluca Udroiu who won two MWC titles last season. Miller also received second place in the 200-yard back with a time of 2:07.96. Whitney Thomson (Allen, Texas) won the 100-yard back in 58.98, just over three seconds ahead of her UNLV opponent.

Other UNM first-place swimming finishes included senior Myra Will (Tillamook, Ore.) in the 50-yard free (24.10), Heather DiLuzio in the 100-yard breast (1:09.83) and the UNM A team in the 200-yard free medley (1:38.22).

Barras' pair of firsts at the meet came as her fourth and fifth of the season. In the 1-meter she scored 259.27, topping teammate Tracey Berghian who had a second-place finish with 233.17 points. Barras scored a 272.56 in the 3-meter, more than 30 points ahead of the next finisher, Nichole McLean of UNLV. Berghian finished third in the 3-meter with 237.23 points.

The Lobos are off this weekend before they host San Diego State, BYU and Northern Arizona, Nov. 7 at home at 6 p.m. UNM will then host the Lobo Invitational, Nov. 8-9, with start times set for 4 p.m. on the 8th and 9 a.m. on the 9th.
