Swimming and Diving: Lobos Complete First Day At Indiana Invite
Bloomington, Ind. - The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team completed its first day at the Indiana Invite with top finishes from senior Myra Will (Tillamook, Ore.) in the 50 free and divers Becca Barras (Kitchener, Ontario) and Tracey Berghian (Phoenix, Ariz.) This is the first out-of-conference meet the Lobos have competed in this season. Over the next three days the squad will match up against Tennessee, Clemson, host team Indiana, Evansville, Miami and Cincinnati.
The first event of the day was the 500 free. UNM's Robyn Miller (Yountville, Calif.) had the highest Lobo finish with a time of 5:01.56. Although the time was not good enough to advance the freshman to the finals this evening, she did compete in the consolation finals and placed first with a time of 4:58.60.
Whitney Thomson (Allen, Texas) had the top finish for New Mexico in the 200 IM (36th place) with a time of 2:12.77.
Myra Will had the most successful Lobo swimming performance of the day. In the 50 free she had a preliminary finish of fifth (23.83), matching her best time set to date. In the finals of the 50 free Will placed seventh in a time of 23.86.
UNM also competed in two relay events, the first of which was the 200-free. The UNM 'A' team captured ninth place (1:38.46) while the 'B' team finished in 14th place (1:44.72.). The Lobos also had top-16 finishes in the 400-free relay. The 'A' team completed the event in 13th place with a time of 4:01.97 while the 'B' team trailed in 16th place (4:12.23).
Lobo divers, Barras and Berghian had solid performances in the cherry and silver on the first day of the meet. Barras placed third on the 1-meter with a preliminary score of 240.65 and a final score of 271.80. Berghian finished behind Barras, in seventh, with a score of 239.70 in the preliminary round and 248.05 in the finals.
Barras placed even higher on the 3-meter springboard, grabbing fourth place with 459.10 points in the preliminaries and 451.65 in the finals. Berghian placed ninth in the same event with a preliminary score of 423.65. The junior did not advance to the finals.
