Prior to UNM

Maria, a big hitter from Moscow, comes to UNM with some very good results in her native Russia. Coach Canada had to fly all the way to Moscow during those awful fires in the summer of 2010 with smoke covering the city to find Maria. She is a 2011 graduate from M.I. Tsvetaeva No 1619 in Moscow, Russia and was accepted into Shamil Tarpisvhev International Tennis Academy.

Personal

She is the daughter of Natalia Sablina. Maria enjoys traveling and listening to music. Her favorite athlete is Jennifer Capriati. Her nickname given by the team is the "Killer." She plans to major in Business Administration.

Head Coach Roy Canada on Sablina:

"Maria has a very explosive game with great hands which is very well suited for fast courts. Keep an eye out for Maria to be making a big impact in the college scene right away."

Assistant Coach Michelle Heidbrink on Sablina:

"Maria has the game to become a strong collegiate contender right off the bat as a freshman. With her big ground strokes and serve, she has a great sense of offensive play at the baseline and can put points away at the net. She is a fighter on and off the court and loves to compete."
