Lobos Take Second Consecutive 4-3 Win This Weekend
March 3, 2013
BOZEMAN, MONT.--The Lobos women's tennis team seems to like cutting things close. This past season, the Lobos have had three 4-3 matches and now make it four after edging past Idaho 4-3. The Lobos are now 3-1 when it comes to those types of matches and improve to 4-5 overall.
The match started of this morning with some doubles action.
At number three doubles, Sarah Mahboob Khan and Michaela Oldani competed against Alejandra Lozano and Beatriz Flores. The two teams were close up until when Idaho won five games. Then UNM had enough and closed out the match winning with a score of 8-5.
The Lobos took the doubles point in good fashion and looked to seal the deal in doubles. Idaho had another plan in mind.
At the number one spot, Bezdickova was the first off the court after her 6-1, 6-2 victory over Lozano.
At the number two position, Grbac fell to Sanz with a close match of 6-4, 7-5.
At the number three spot, Eggleston also had a close match against Alexander falling with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
At the fourth court, Khan was the second to finish after her win over Barcenilla with a score of 6-2, 6-3.
At number five singles, Richardson fell to Flores with a score of 6-3, 6-3.
With all of these results, the match was all tied up at 3-3 with the winner of number six singles to decide the match.
The match went to three sets because of how close the two were competition-wise. Katie Wookey faced Alejandra Lozano and had closed out the first set 6-2. Lozano rallied back to take the second in close contest 6-4.
The two players had close opening games in the third set but Wookey found some new energy at that point. She did not drop a game after her opponent had reached three and clinched the win for the Lobos with a final score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
"Very proud of our team today," Head Coach Erica Perkins Jasper said. It was yet again, a total team effort with Katie Wookey stepping up big under pressure to clinch the win. All in all, it was a great weekend of tennis where we competed better and better each day."
The Lobos improve to 4-5 overall and will continue on the road to take on conference opponent Boise State on March 9, 2013 and then Eastern Washington on March 10, 2013 in Boise, Idaho.
