Mix of Tough Conditions and Tough Team Lead to 7-0 Loss for Lobos
April 1, 2012
LAS VEGAS, NEV.--It was a mixture of 20 mph winds and a tough San Diego State team that led to a 7-0 loss for the Lobos in a neutral zone. The Lobos so far are 0-4 in conference play and 7-9 for the overall season.
At number three doubles, Alyssa Caffey and Nikolina Grbac were up 6-5 against Cioffi/Antonana and needed only one more point to clinch the doubles point for the Lobos. Cioffi/Antonana were not ready to call it quits just yet, coming back to win the match 9-7.
The Lobos could not quite seal the deal at doubles, so they looked to singles to make up some ground there.
At number one singles, Michaela Bezdickova fought hard in the first set against Julia Wais but fell in the tiebreak 7-6. Michaela Bezdickova could not get the leg up on her opponent falling with a final score of 7-6, 6-4.
At number two singles, Susanna Kuuttila was scheduled to play but was hurt due to an injury before the match causing the lineup to be shifted. Kristin Eggleston took her spot taking on Emma Cioffi falling in a close second set with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
At number three singles, Maria Sablina had two close sets against Laura Antonana. She was defeated with a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Alyssa Caffey took on Alicia Aguilar at the number four spot falling with a score of 6-1, 6-1.
At the number five position, Nikolina Grbac did her best against Sierra Ellison but it was not enough. Ellison got the better of her winning the match in close sets with a score of 6-4, 7-5.
Michaela Oldani fell to Kristin Buth at the number six spot with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
The Lobos fought hard against San Diego State but it was just not enough to get that first win in conference play.
"We had some very tough conditions to play in today with 20 mph winds the entire match," Head Coach Roy Canada said. "We had our chances in doubles and played them close in several of our singles matches letting go on a few leads."
The Lobos will continue their conference trail going up against Colorado State and Wyoming on April 7-8, 2012 with both matches starting at 10 a.m. in Laramie, Wyoming.
