The Mountain West Conference announced the names of the MWC women's tennis 10th Anniversary team today. Among the list were former Lobos Maja Kovacek (2002-2006), Iva Gersic (2004-2007) and Sandy Lukowski (2000-2004).

Kovacek and Gersic were two of the seven former MWC players to make the singles list.

Kovacek became New Mexico's first women's tennis player to be a two-time All-American and was named the MWC Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005. Kovacek competed at three NCAA championships in both singles and doubles and was also named the UNM Alumni Association Female Athlete of the Year in 2005. Kovacek earned MWC All-Conference Player in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006.

"Maja was the best player to ever come to New Mexico," head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz said. "Based on the fact that she got to the NCAA's three out of her four years at New Mexico. She was also chosen to represent the MWC and was a finalist for the NCAA Sports Women of the Year award. Maja was our most distinguished player."

Kovacek holds the record for most career doubles wins at New Mexico with 119. She also holds New Mexico's No.1 spot with the most combined singles and doubles career wins with 218 and has the most combined singles and doubles wins in a season with 64.

Along with Kovacek, Gersic was also a two-time NCAA participant in 2005 and 2006. She earned All-American honors in doubles with partner Kovacek, and the duo also had the highest national doubles ranking in Lobo history making all the way to the No. 2 spot in 2006. Gersic was the Co. MWC Player of the Year in 2005 along with Kovacek and earned MWC All-Conference Player in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

"Unfortunately Iva had a career ending injury her senior year, otherwise she surely would have gotten MWC player of the year if not for that," Kolankiewicz said.

Gersic still holds the New Mexico's No.1 spot for the highest career winning percentage with a 178-40 (.816) record.

"Iva has the highest winning percentage of any player to come to New Mexico," Kolankiewicz said. "Iva was consistently good, she won eight out of 10 times she walked out on court. She was strong in singles and doubles."

One of the three doubles teams to earn a spot on the list was the duo of Kovacek and Lukowski. They were New Mexico's first All-American doubles team. Together they made it to the semi-finals of the NCAA in 2004 and were the first New Mexico doubles team to make it to the Final Four.

"Sandy was a solid player for the Lobos," Kolankiewicz said. "She was always a strong doubles player but came shining through when she paired with Maja."

The duo compiled a 33-8 record in 2004 and made it all the way to the No. 5 spot in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
