ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. For only the second time in UNM womens tennis program history, the No. 49 Lobos defeated the No. 57 Cougars of BYU. After securing the doubles point at No. 1 and 3 doubles spots, New Mexico captured wins at three of six singles positions to earn the exciting 4-3 victory this afternoon. Maja Kovacek and Sandy Lukowski were a perfect 2-0, getting wins in both singles and doubles competition. The Lobos improve to 11-8, 3-2 in the MWC.

For the third straight match, the doubles team of Kovacek and Lukowski has come away from the Lobo Tennis Center with a win. This time the duo slipped past Liza Klempner and Dominique Reynolds of BYU, 9-7. At No. 3, Tiffany Robertson and Michelle Heidbrink also played to a close win, edging the pair of Rebecca Pike and Olga Bulytcheva, 9-8. Maria Ruiz-Fabrega and Rachel Hatley lost a tight 8-5 match to Hadley Macfarlane and Tara Porter.

The Lobos clinched two decisive wins at the top two singles spots. Maja Kovacek moved back to No. 1 after two wins at No. 2 against Air Force and Utah. The move was a beneficial one, as she defeated Liza Klempner in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Sandy Lukowski played the final match of the day for New Mexico at No. 2. After winning the first set 7-5, Lukowski battled to a 5-4 lead in the second with Dominique Reynolds. She closed out the win after an almost five minute rally to end the match at 7-5, 6-4. Tiffany Robertson had the final win for the Lobos at No. 4. She beat Tara Porter, 6-3, 6-2.

Tjasa Suvak, Michelle Heidbrink and Maria Ruiz-Fabrega dropped their matches at the No. 3, 4 and 6 positions. Suvak fell to Olga Bulytcheva, 6-1, 6-1 while Heidbrink was defeated, 6-3, 6-0 by the Cougars Rebecca Pike. After winning her previous two conference games, Ruiz-Fabrega was unable to get past Hadley Macfarlane, losing 6-1, 6-1.
