Women's Tennis: Red Raiders Pose No Threat To Lobos

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobo women’s tennis team is on its way to the Mountain West Conference Championships in San Diego next week feeling excited and confident after downing the Red Raiders of Texas Tech (3-14, 2-9 Big 12) at the Lobo Tennis Club today by a solid 6-1 score. Despite missing out on the doubles point, with losses at the No. 1 and 2 positions, UNM cleaned up in singles, sweeping all six spots. The Lobos finish their regular conference schedule with a 14-8 record, 5-2 MWC, as well as an outstanding 9-0 home court mark.

“This was a hard match mentally for us today," said head coach Kathy Kolankiewicz. “It’s impossible not to be thinking about and focussing on the MWC Championships which are only five days away, but we played extremely well, especially at all six singles spots.”

Senior Rachel Hatley, playing in her final home collegiate match, went out in style, defeating Katja Kovacic 6-2, 6-2 at the sixth spot. Hatley finishes the 2003 regular season with a 7-5 singles record.

At No. 1, Maja Kovacek battled the ever-intensifying winds to beat Irina Tereschenko 6-7, 6-1, 6-3. Tiffany Robertson also battled the winds on the court next to Kovacek. The Lobo sophomore won the first set against Red Raider opponent Anchen Lombard, 6-4, but then trailed for a majority of the second set. With the score at 4-3 in Lombard’s favor, Robertson turned on the heat and came back to beat Lombard 7-5 in the second set for the win at No. 5.

Ever steady fourth-seeded Michelle Heidbrink got a solid win over Tara Browning, 6-1, 6-2, to improve her record to 6-2 overall this season at that spot. Sandy Lukowski and Tjasa Suvak rounded out the Lobo wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots respectively. Lukowski earned a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 victory against TTU’s Beverly Dawson, while Suvak dominated Kendall Brooks, 7-6, 6-3.

New Mexico travels to San Diego, Calif., April 24-26, for the 2003 MWC Championships. The No. 3 seeded Lobos match up against the six-seeded Air Force Academy Falcons at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 at the Barnes Tennis Center on the campus of SDSU. The last time UNM matched up against AFA was on March 27 at home. The Lobos came away with a 6-1 win.
