Lobos Fall To Long Beach State In First Round Of NCAA Regional Championship
May 12, 2006 Los Angeles - The 46th ranked Lobos (14-9) fell to the No. 27 49ers (22-4) today in the first round of the NCAA Regional Championship at USC's Marks Stadium with a 4-1 loss. The Lobo women's tennis team held on strong in singles action winning three of the six singles matches but it wasn't enough to hold the 49ers for a win. Long Beach State clinched the doubles point after winning at the No. 2 and 3 doubles positions. The 4th ranked All-Americans Iva Gersic and Maja Kovacek were up 8-8 (6-0) when the match was suspended. In singles action the Lobos made a strong effort to come back with three Lobos ahead in their matches when LBSU won their fourth dual match point and two of the three winning matches were called. At the No. 4 spot Ola Abou-Zekry defeated LBSU's Sandra Rocha 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 5 and 6 spots Lucy Scott and Mackenzie White were both up when the match was called. Scott was defeating Jessica Weeks 6-3, 3-6, 3-2 while White was defeating Rachael Porsz 6-4, 6-5. The Championship marks the end of the season for New Mexico who compiled a 14-9 season record for the year. The Lobos will now start to focus on the NCAA Individual Championships where the No. 4 ranked doubles team of Gersic and Kovacek received an automatic bid and No. 31 Kovacek earned an at-large bid in the singles bracket.
