May 18, 2012
Armin Triendl of men's skiing and Michaela Bezdickova of women's tennis were selected to the Capital One First Team Academic All-District squad for CoSIDA's District VII, making them eligible for Academic All-America honors. The awards give New Mexico six First Team Academic All-District honorees for the year, and 27 over the past three years.
Both Triendl and Bezdickova are advanced to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The Lobo have already had three student-athletes earned Academic All-America honors this year. Levi Rossi of men's soccer was named Third Team, while women's basketball's Caroline Durbin and volleyball's Kelly Williamson were both named First Team.
Triendl has seven top five finishes on the season, including a first place at the RMISA Qualifier in the slalom. He was named both RMISA Alpine MVP, and the RMISA Skier of the Year. Triendl earned First Team All-America honors in the Giant Slalom in 2012, finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships.
Overall he had seven top five finishes, and his finishes in the giant slalom were 2nd, 3rd, 4th (Regionals), 5th, 5th (NCAAs) and 8th. He helped UNM finish 8th at the NCAAs, the 29th consecutive top 10 finish for the ski team.
He is also a three-time Lobo Scholar-Athlete, and was named to the 2012 Fidelity Investments UNM All-Academic Team.
Bezdickova played in the number one singles flight for the tennis team, sporting a 21-9 overall, including a 13-7 record at No. 1 singles. Bezdickova was 1-1 vs. nationally ranked opponents, and went 15-13 doubles. She was named All-Mountain West in both singles and in doubles. Her 21 singles wins led UNM, with the next closest player garnering 11. The two-time team MVP has played in the No. 1 singles match in every dual match of her two-year career.
She was named to the 2012 UNM Fidelity Investments All-Academic squad at UNM, and she is a two-time Lobo Scholar-Athlete.
