Each week during the 2008 season a different Lobo will fill you in on what is going on in the life of the New Mexico Volleyball Team. Look for a new blog each Monday morning throughout the season.
August 18 - Sarah Kwasigroch, senior setter, Palos Park, Ill.
Hi all and welcome to another exciting season of Lobo volleyball!
With week one of preseason complete, here is a quick recap of last week's events. On Friday, Aug. 8, our team reported to Johnson Center for a team meeting and what we all like to call "Christmas in August". This is when we walk into the locker room and are able to try on all of our new Lobo apparel and uniforms for the upcoming season. We finished our first night with a great Italian dinner at Trombino's.
Saturday morning started the first official day of practice. We started off very strong with three practices and continued with two practices each day for the rest of the week. Our team has high goals and expectations for this season, which help motivate us each morning and afternoon.
I think everyone's least favorite part of the day is the conclusion of practice when we all take a freezing cold ice bath to eliminate our soreness. We all look forward to moving our practice into the main gym on Monday, Aug. 18, because our floor has just been re-finished and is finally ready for us to start playing on it. In the mean time, we've been working out in the South and Auxiliary Gyms of Johnson Center.
Off the court our team is bonding and getting along very well, which creates great team chemistry on the court. We eat lunch and dinner together as a team everyday and spend most of our hours before and after practice watching the Olympics together in the hotel and in the team room. Our team members have become big fans of water polo and fencing, while we also cheer on and admire Michael Phelps and all of our USA volleyball teams!
Most of our team was also able to attend the Lobo football scrimmage on Saturday to support Lobo athletics. It was a nice break from the gym and it was also Kelly's first American football game!
Sunday was a much-needed day off! We were able to sleep in, or at least attempt to sleep in, and relax and rest our bodies for the full week of practice ahead. We had a team barbeque in the afternoon, which included a beautiful pool, tanning, and excellent food. It was definitely a highlight of the week!
Well, time to gear up for another full week of practice as we prepare for the Alumni Match this Saturday!
