VolleyBlog: Getting Ready For Season-Opening Tournament (and No. 4 Stanford!)
Aug. 24, 2010
Welcome back Lobo Volleyball fans to a new and exciting 2010 season!
We have been working hard on the court and in the weight room since you saw us last.
We just finished our two weeks of preseason, and for those of you who want to know what happens in our preseason, it goes as follows...
For the setters, our day goes something like this ... waking up at 6 a.m. ... getting to the gym by 7 a.m. ... practice from 8 a.m.-9 a.m. ... the rest of the team joins us from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m. ... lunch ... team practice again from 2 p.m.-4:30 p.m. ... ice baths ... and finally, dinner. Other days we did not have the setters-only practice and some included weight-lifting down on South Campus.
During the past two weeks we have been working really hard to speed up our offense as well as improving individual skills. The freshmen that have joined our team are working hard and bringing a new energy to the group. We have a lot more depth in the lineup so we all are battling for our positions. Since we all improved during our spring season as well as the summer, we are starting this season at a whole new level of play, which will be crucial for our first matches of the season.
On Saturday we played our annual Alumni match and this game is exciting for a few different reasons. First, it means that double/triple days are over! Second, we get to scrimmage other people besides each other, and last, we get to play against the girls that recently left the team. In this case Allie Suiter, Anna Lehne, and Rose Morris. It was great seeing all of them again as well as playing against other great players like Jeanne Fairchild, Robin Miramontes, and of course the AMAZING Lisa Beauchene! We have some pretty tall teams in our upcoming matches so it was critical that we were able to play against girls that would put up a big block for our hitters.
The 2010-11 school year has started on Monday. We are all finding our way around to our new classes, making sure we meet and greet all of our teachers. We were all very excited to purchase our school supplies, filling our new UNM volleyball backpacks and wearing them with pride! All of our freshman are attending their first classes of their first semester of college and from what I have heard so far they are loving all the new experiences.
This weekend is our MCM Elegante Lobo Classic where we will take on Pepperdine, Tulane, and No. 4 Stanford! Playing these teams is going to take UNM volleyball to a whole new level. The seniors, Lisa Meeter, Taylor Hadfield and I have known about the teams we would be taking on this year since Jeff sat us down in our Spring season. He wanted to make sure we were ready to challenge and push the team further than we have even been. Without a doubt we all said "Yes!" and began training.
We will continue to prepare this week by refining individual skills and putting everything together as a unit. We are all excited and are all feeding off the excitement that is surrounding UNM volleyball right now. Our director of operations, Jordie Hadfield, as well as our fearless coaching staff, have spent numerous hours selling tickets to these games so we can show everyone what kind of community we have surrounding our team! We especially need people to come support at our Jam Johnson game vs. Stanford on Sunday, August 29 at 2p.m. Thousands of tickets have already been sold and we still have many more to go around. We look forward to coming out of the Lobo tunnel and seeing all of you and hearing your cheers!
We're prepared for a great season and hope to see you all at the games this weekend at the Johnson Center and the rest of the year!
