Wichita, Kan. -- The University of New Mexico dropped their second match of the day to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks, 3-1, at the Wichita State Green Mill Restaurant Volleyball Classic. The Lobos took the first game 30-25, then dropped the next three, 25-30, 17-30, 28-30. New Mexico is now 0-2 on the season.

Once again junior outside hitter Anna Reines led the Lobo attack scoring 23 kills and hitting .333 for the match. Reines’ 23 kills and 9 digs are both career highs, which were previously set in the earlier match against the Hurricanes of Miami.

Senior Vanessa Shields has claimed leadership duties scoring her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore setter Monica Meihack is driving the attack scoring 47 assists against the Ladyjacks.

Junior middle blocker Lynzie Hayes scored double figure kills with 12 and defensively contributed 7 digs. As a team the Lobos scored 43 digs to the Ladyjacks 51.

“We were definitely better in this second match,” stated Lobo head coach Kelley Sliva. “We played and passed better, where as in the first match we were inconsistent. The runs Stephen F. Austin scored, we were unable to recover from. They were scrappy and aggressive and we didn’t respond as we needed to. Our attitude and effort are excellent and we will grow into our game. We need to take care of the ball and prepare for our next two opponents tomorrow.”

Numbers wise New Mexico out hit SFA .216 (59 kills, 26 errors in 153 attacks) to .159 (57k-33e-151ta). Serving proved a problem for the Lobos as the Ladyjacks scored 11 service aces to UNM’s five. SFA outblocked the Lobos 13.0 to 7.0.

New Mexico will face host Wichita State at 12 noon tomorrow followed by a match-up with the Georgia Bulldogs at 5 p.m. to finish tournament play. The Lobos next action will be on the road at the Arizona Wildcat Classic, Sept. 6-7 in Tucson.I
