Lobo Volleyblog: Great Opening Weekend To Aloha!
Sept. 1, 2010
Hello Lobo Fans!
Well it was quite the weekend for Lobo Volleyball. We had just finished the Alumni match and it was finally time to start preparing to play our preseason competition. We would start off the weekend with Pepperdine and Tulane both highly reputable teams and end with Stanford, the number four team in the nation, also our Jam Johnson match
Friday I woke up and the butterflies had already arrived. The feeling of seeing Johnson Center ready for Game Day and the excitement of playing another team just made the moment all the more exciting. We all went to our Friday classes with the exception of Amy, Jade, and I who have no Friday classes, then went on to our normal pass and serve to get extra reps before the match. From there we had a delicious pre-game meal at Il Vicino and then went back to Johnson Center to get mentally and physically prepared for the game.
Running out into a huge crowd for our first opening match was priceless and just inpsired our team to compete even more. We were able to maintain a high intensity and beat Pepperdine 3-0. Our coach, Jeff Nelson, had been in the same conference with Pepperdine before he came to New Mexico and had never beat Pepperdine 3-0 so it was quite an honor to do that for him. The Tulane match had the same result, a nice strong finish of 3-0 and a great feeling going into our grand finale of the weekend, Stanford.
While the result of the Stanford game came to a loss the overall feeling of the match came with great happiness and success. For the four years I have been here, running out to start our warm ups usually is greeted by a few early fans and our families, but for this game we were able to be cheered on by almost 2,000 fans within the first few minutes of warm ups. By the time we ran out the second time the roar of the Lobo Fans in Johnson Center was monumental. I took a moment to mentally capture the moment and soak in the atmosphere. You could feel the emotion of the crowd while you played and could feel the support within the stands.
I look back on the day when I was a freshman just starting out playing to a crowd of 400 and now we are filling the stands with close to 4,000 people. Jeff, Steve, and Lisa have done a great job building this program along with our team and to see that transformation will be a memory I will hold onto forever. Without our Lobo Fans our team would not be the same.
While our team did not perform to the peak of its ability and started a little rusty in the first two games, our third game showed that Lobo Volleyball will always fight and that the crowd believed in us as well. Cheers would roar out of the crowd when Miquella Lovato or Allison Buck made a huge dig, or when Jade Michaelsen would chase down a ball and lay up a perfect set, or when Ashley Rhoades made a Huge Block! I was also proud of Kelly Williamson and Taylor Hadfield for making the All-Tournament team and the way they competed really proves just how good New Mexico Volleyball can be. I always think of them as All-Tournament players and playing with them is always inspiring.
We, as a team, have another game of experience and even higher expectations of who we are as athletes and Lobos coming into this upcoming week. We will be taking our next journey to Hawai'i... ALOHA Lobo Fans! We are preparing to take on Michigan State, USC, and Hawaii. This will be another great week for Lobo Volleyball and we are planning on taking home some wins! Thank you again for all your support.
Till next time ...
